scent marketing has become the latest little secret in marketing. Studies have been done that shows how scents can affect people in ways such as making them eat more or buy more for example. One study was conducted with tow groups of people. Group “A” was given a 1600kcal diet to follow with moderate exercise for 6 weeks and group “B” was given a 1600kcal diet to follow with moderate exercise as well as scents to smell. The scents purpose was to curb the participant’s appetite helping them to resist the temptation of eating more. At the end of the study Group “A” had lost 10lbs in 6 weeks and group “B” had lost 17lbs in 6 weeks. The 7lb weight loss difference between the groups raised eyebrows among other industries like retail and hotel chains.More and more companies are using scent marketing by installing scent machines. The machines can be set for a specific time to disburse the scent and the machines can hold a variety of scents and disburse them in the order the customer wants. The machines were designed to help businesses bring in more customers while being easy to operate.Although companies are adopting scent systems it does not guarantee that customers will buy more. Scent marketing is meant to be used as an enhancement to a marketing plan that has already been put in place. The different scents will draw the customers in but great customer service, quality products and pricing also plays a vital role.
